Ubuntu guy in a world of Apples… Part II: The OS and utils

No Gravatar

My adventure in the world of Apples goes on. As I mostly liked the iron of the MacBook, now it is time to go on and see if I can do usual task as simple as in Ubuntu.

So I gathered things I do mostly:

  1. Photo processing
  2. Java development
  3. Listen to music – I’ll need a good media player, an alternative to Amarok
  4. Browse the net – Firefox or better
  5. Chat through GTalk and Skype
  6. Copy files from/to FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, SMB – a twin panel, alternative to Krusader
  7. Simple text editing – jEdit should work
  8. Formated text, spreadsheet and presentation – OpenOffice.org or alternative
  9. Video playing – mplayer with front-end or alternative.

Ubuntu guy in a world of Apples… Part I: The iron

No Gravatar

As I promised, here it is, the first part.

How do I do with a small MacBook? Do I like it? Today I’m going to examine only the Iron.

For me, The big difference in a first place is that unlike Linux or Windows, Mac is not only an operating system or a hardware. It is both. So what I except is smooth, perfect functionality and harmony between the iron and the “softness”. Read more…

Ubuntu guy in the world of Apples…

No Gravatar

As you might know I’m a Ubuntu guy. I like Linux, OSS and I enjoy using it.

Once I was a C/C++ developer working on Windows, creating Windows applications. So I know Windows quite well (not much changed). Nowadays each time I have to sit in front of a Windows machine as a devloper I’ll get frustrated, as my productivity drops by at least 40%. Okay, it might be only because I am out of practice, but I beleave that at least 20% is because it so much easier/faster to work with Linux. – Just think of the console, Eclipse speed, and no reboot ;-)

Now as so many of my friends raved about the Apples, I’ll give it a try.

The MacBook with its small and firm design caught me. My first thought was, it would be perfect for photo companion, and it could help me out on trips as a replacement for my desktop developer machine running Eclipse and other Java stuff.

So here am I, today with a borrowed MacBook and ready for adventure.

If you’re interested in how an Ubuntu guy can cope with the Apples, stay tuned.

Eclipse P2 puzzle

My frustration about Eclipse P2 from the last time grows…

I just wanted to add documentation for few plug-ins today. As usually those documentations are also plug-ins. P2 here we go…

Found the plug-ins in no time. Install…

And wait, wait, wait… (about 5-20 minutes!) while my eclipse is locked, as P2 is modal. Why? At least let me work while P2 figures out if those plug-ins would fit my installation.

Fortunately I can send the install part, – if everything is fine for P2, – to work in background, but that does not lasts so long usually.

As I learned so many times that things ain’t what they look like, I started to browse the Net (after 3h of cooldown). And I found a lot of pro and contra. There is even a recept how to replace P2 with UM.

Now as I retraced the whole thing one again, I can understand both parties. Developers are probably frustrated, while simple users are happy with it, – or at least will be…

I still do not feel P2 mature enough to replace UM (Update Manager), as there are missing features and obvious bugs.

Missing stuff:

  • Resolve dependencies automatically – there are a hell a lot of plug-ins, sometimes I just can’t gather myself what do I need. – You need to know the software you’re installing… – this is no good for simple users…
  • Show information about the plug-in and its dependencies. Instead of right click, properties…

I’m still frustrated, and I hope it is just because of the absence of the knowledge.

I still need to pull up my plug-ins for 3.4, so I’ll be learning soon… :-)
